In the ever-evolving landscape of digital technology, Allegra has carved out a niche for herself in a field often characterised by a significant gender imbalance. A 33-year-old Italian chemical engineer turned digital product manager, her story is one of resilience, introspection, and passion—a journey marked by the challenges and triumphs of being a female in a traditionally male-dominated arena.

The Only Woman At The Table

Allegra’s professional journey began in the realm of engineering, a domain where female voices are scarce, often among predominantly male colleagues. Throughout her career, Allegra has frequently found herself as the sole woman at the table, an experience that has both tested and strengthened her resilience. She reflects on these experiences with a sense of recognition for her inner strength, aware of the complexities these dynamics introduce. “I know where my strengths are,” she asserts, underscoring her determination to maximise her abilities and make her mark in spite of the odds.

Finding Advantage in Disadvantage

Sometimes, Alessa admits, being under-estimated creates the possibility of leveraging perceived disadvantages to her benefit. “When I do good things, they’re like, ‘Oh, wow, she can do that,’” she remarks with a blend of irony and realism. This duality captures the essence of navigating spaces where women are underrepresented—transforming prejudice into platforms for proving capabilities beyond doubt.

Yet, Allegra’s journey is not without its frustrations. She has had moments where her gender has seemingly excluded her from opportunities, recalling times early in her career when perceptions overshadowed merits. “I remember getting ready for a client meeting in India only to be told they needed an ‘older man with white hair’. It was bizarre,” she shares, highlighting an all-too-common experience of women in business. Through these experiences, Allegra has grown from accepting societal perceptions to challenging them.

The Confidence to Challenge

Today, rather than stepping quietly aside, she counters outdated views with confidence and a touch of humour, questioning those who question her, from the comments on her wardrobe choices to the undercurrents of exclusion that linger in boardrooms. Allegra’s reflections extend beyond her personal journey, considering how embracing differences could reshape industry cultures altogether. She wonders if true impartiality is achievable and whether being aware of diversity or being blind to it serves better in leadership. She argues for a balanced view—recognising that diversity enriches team dynamics and drives innovation.

Fun as a Career Prerogative

Despite the hurdles, Allegra’s spirit shines through, an embodiment of her belief in the power of fun and enjoyment as essential ingredients in her professional life. For Allegra, the road ahead is about seeking further growth and nurturing potential. She yearns for mentorship and guidance that align with her dynamic aspirations, understanding that to maintain joy in work, her next steps must allow for fun and creativity.

In Allegra’s journey, we find both a reflection and an inspiration—a candid portrayal of a woman’s experience in the male-dominated spheres of engineering and digital technology. It’s a tale of resilience, courage, and the unwavering pursuit of driving change from within.

In an era where diversity and inclusion are becoming ever more critical, Greg stands out as a resonant voice of courage and authenticity. His journey is one of personal transformation and leadership, etched with moments of challenge and triumph.

A Journey Back in Time

Greg recalls his upbringing in a region steeped in rich history, yet shadowed by economic challenges following industrial decline in the 1980s. Despite growing up in a less affluent environment, Greg reflects fondly on his childhood, filled with innocent adventures and the unwavering support of a hardworking family. His transition from a future possibly destined for traditional local industries to launching an LGBTQ+ network in his organisation is a journey filled with unexpected twists.

Turning Points and Embracing Difference

Midway through his career in engineering, everything changed. 2015 marked the year Greg embraced his identity unapologetically, standing on a platform, not just as an engineer, but as an openly gay man. It was a moment that catalysed change, both within himself and the corporate landscape around him. Greg speaks candidly about the fears he carried before coming out and how those fears were ultimately unfounded. His bravery sparked a pivotal shift within the organisation, leading to an openly supportive culture and a wave of inclusivity initiatives.

Challenges of the Past and Opportunities for the Future

Greg’s recollections draw a vivid picture of the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, especially within male-dominated environments. He relays the struggle of navigating a world where microaggressions and exclusionary behaviours were the norm. Yet, he remains a testament to the strength derived from staying true to oneself. The narrative shifts to the support of allies—individuals who treated Greg not differently because of his sexual orientation, but with the empathy and respect his authenticity deserved. This support, he notes, was instrumental in his journey.

The Role of Similarities in Bridging Differences

For Greg, it’s the shared human experiences that truly bind us. His story compels readers to challenge the visible differences and dig deeper into the unseen similarities that unite us. Whether it’s about being gay within the realms of engineering or the universal challenges faced by parents and workers, Greg urges us to look beyond the surface and embrace our common humanity.

Reflecting on Leadership and Life’s Lessons

Greg’s narrative is not merely about adversity but about learning and leading. He reflects on pivotal moments, wishing he had embraced his true self sooner. There are lessons here about authenticity in leadership and the power of representation. His reflections delve into the potential impact he could have had, encouraging new leaders to embrace their true selves from the onset.

In his current role, Greg continues to be a source of empowerment, using his platform to effect change and uplift others. His journey from a challenging start to advocacy is a story of resilience and the unwavering pursuit of equality. Greg’s story is a powerful reminder of the strength in authenticity. It serves as an inspiring testament to the transformative power of embracing one’s true self and the substantial impact such courage can have in both personal and professional realms.

In a culture that often measures exceptionality through showy or noisily-trumpeted achievements, Jo-Ann’s story highlights the quiet strength found in resilience and perseverance. This narrative offers a glimpse into her journey, marked by personal growth and the courage to embrace a distinctive path.

Listening to Jo-Ann means entering a world where fortitude is a fundamental aspect of life. Through her candid reflections, she shares a story punctuated by challenges and significant personal growth. In her role as an executive in risk oversight, her professional and personal narrative speaks to overcoming adversity while cultivating skills that distinguish her journey.

A Childhood in an Extended Family

Jo-Ann’s formative years unfolded within the embrace of an extended family all living in one flat in London, providing a nurturing environment and inter-generational support for her single mother, a dedicated nurse working long hours. This familial support offered stability, allowing Jo-Ann to thrive despite the demands of her mother’s career.

Adolescence introduced Jo-Ann to influential friendships and a local youth group at church. While these relationships played a crucial role, she remained true to her values, even when that path led her away from familiar company. This decision underscored the importance for her of meaningful connections over superficial ties.

Confronting Profound Loss

The unexpected loss of her mother at 28 was a defining moment for Jo-Ann, reshaping her views on life and work. Through therapy and introspection, she transformed her grief into personal growth. Perseverance became her guiding principle as she navigated professional challenges in an unsupportive environment, ultimately prioritising her mental health and finding ways to change her outcomes without compromising her authenticity.

Owning Exceptionality

Initially hesitant to discuss her ‘exceptional’ status, Jo-Ann ultimately accepted the invitation to share her story, recognising the value in defining exceptionality for herself. For Jo-Ann, enduring adversity is a significant achievement in its own right. And it helps her in the work she is doing supporting others.

Jo-Ann plays an active role in promoting diversity and inclusion in her workplace. Her co-creation of a women’s support group at work seeks to dismantle barriers and foster understanding, promoting equitable representation within the largely male-dominated financial sector.

Leadership as a Journey

Jo-Ann aspires to leadership not merely through titles, but through actions. She seeks mentorship opportunities, leads by example, and continually engages in her own learning journey. Her leadership style emphasises collaboration and respect, advocating for a work environment where diverse voices are embraced.

Conclusion

Jo-Ann’s story underscores the power of fortitude, illustrating that true exceptionality often resides in the capacity to endure and grow amidst life’s challenges. Her journey encourages us to explore our narratives, embrace inherent strengths, and acknowledge the impact we contribute to our communities.

In her ongoing journey, Jo-Ann remains committed to fostering opportunities for growth, both for herself and others. Her leadership, rooted in empathy and understanding, serves as an example, reminding us that each forward step, no matter how modest, is an important stride in life’s journey.

Whether facing personal or professional challenges, Jo-Ann’s narrative serves as an inspiring reminder of the value of resilience. Her story invites us to recognise fortitude within ourselves and others, encouraging us to approach our journeys with grace and quiet determination.

Ideas only grow when you share them

Fifteen Cerestrial members came together for an evening of good food and sometimes raucous debate. From all ages, all backgrounds, and multiple cultures, we laughed, listened, and made plans to change the world….

….some of which we remembered in the morning (thankfully we had a scribe).

A remarkable group of people joined us at Cerestrial’s latest Changemakers Dinner – coming together to tackle a question that’s been driving our mission: why is navigating leadership still so difficult for people from underrepresented backgrounds?

There is plenty of talk about making workplaces more inclusive. But we founded Cerestrial to do it differently. And therefore better. Less corporate rubbish, more reality. Our mission as founders? Connect exceptional people who’ve carved their own paths with those who are ready to do the same.

The conversations at these events weren’t your typical networking. The people who joined us – representing different industries, backgrounds, and career stages – spoke openly about what it means to be “the only one in the room.” One participants’ words particularly resonated: “When you stand up as a person of difference, people appreciate you speaking up, but then they make you feel like a rare zoo exhibit.”

What did we learn?

Representing an underrepresented group is exhausting. Sometimes you want to wave your flag. Other times, you’d rather just get on with your job without being the designated diversity champion. Cerestrial has created a space where these complex feelings can be unpacked.

When we climb, we need to leave our ropes behind for the next explorer. Navigating majority-dominated industries is all about finding people who’ll back you. Fascinatingly, we discovered how many people want to be better allies but are paralyzed by the fear of getting it wrong.

You are not alone, no matter how different you feel. Experience is vital, but power comes from sharing. We can learn from older generations. And also from younger ones. But we have to turn up where they are to be able to listen to them.

“Where do you want to go next?”

You tell us. We’ll go with you.

Ready to join our community of exceptional people who are changing the world? Cerestrial can’t wait to welcome you. Together we can do remarkable things.

According to my notes, Cerestrial was born on 24th April, 2023 – which makes us almost two years old at time of publishing. Although the truth is that she was born lying on the floor of a rasul somewhere in the East Midlands, holding hands with Manisha while we tried to grieve for the last thing we had tried to make together. Or she was made from twisting together decades of highly coloured strands of experiences of being different, of being an outsider, of being strange. Or all of the above.

I don’t know where it started, really. The being different. My brother was born when I was 18 months old – which is not unusual. But he has Downs Syndrome, which is. Although the word everybody used was “special”. To me, he was just my brother. But to everybody else he was “special” and by extension I was different. Especially when he came to my mainstream primary school and I fought every bully in the place week after week until they gently suggested to my parents that I might do better and he might do better if we were schooled separately.

And then, aged eight – we moved. From the relatively inclusive and open-minded sea-facing haven of 1980s Bristol to a land-locked village in Staffordshire. Where, not only were we new, but my Dad was also the Vicar. And I was preposterously bright, and appallingly articulate and used to facing down bullies with rhetoric. And the occasional slap. So – bolshy, opinionated, clever and almost entirely self-sufficient. And insufferable. By the time I’d got to Y6 the gloriously scatterbrained Headmaster told my parents at parents’ evening that he wasn’t sure what he was going to do when I left for secondary school, because I was basically running the school office for him.

I did not really make friends with many girls – because they mostly seemed so silly. And I did not really make friends many with boys – because they mostly seemed so aggressive. I didn’t understand any of the nuances of the social lives of my peers. Adults seemed much easier – they seemed to say what they actually thought out loud instead of saying one thing and meaning another. But that meant that aged 14 or 15 the people I spent time with were in social groups outside of school – men and women in their twenties and thirties and forties. Some of them were generous and kind and considerate and patient. Some of them were predatory.

And of course – this story isn’t everything. It’s a tiny distillation of what might happen when you do not fit in, and you find it hard to find people who share your experiences, and so you cast about anxiously to find a tribe. But it is an origin story of a sort. Because in all of this differentness and difficulty I did always have a place of belonging with my family – otherwise my life might have fallen very badly down the cracks.

And so I learned, bit by bit, to make my own tribe. I learned from the example of my parents, who threw their doors open to anyone who needed a space to belong – because those people were scared, because they were grieving, because they felt alone, because they needed community and laughter and joy and boundless open-minded love. I am not sure that it makes me feel any less different. But I am able to see my difference in communion with everyone else’s. And to see how by sharing it, we can grow.

Looking back, I’m not sure if it was competitiveness that I had when I was growing up – it certainly wasn’t confidence, I just wanted what my brothers seemed to automatically get and the more I was denied it, the more I worked hard to get it. My parents would describe this period of my life (which started age 7 and still exists today), as me being rebellious, unrelenting, disruptive and ultimately, a total pain in the arse.

So, what do I mean by getting what they got automatically? Well, it started out with the usual boys verses girls crap with a large dose of traditional Indian culture thrown in, like staying out with mates, being seen in public with (non-Indian) boys or not having to help in the kitchen every night. But as I got older it was access to education, professional development or career options. Being granted insider knowledge to advance into more influential circles or positions of leadership I never knew existed. Being given a chance to try without having to prove 100% competence first. Don’t get me wrong, I am super proud of my brothers, and they worked hard to get these things, but so did I and yet the difference in access, experience (and outcome) felt so stark and lonely.

Only now, as a parent myself, have I understood that despite appearances, throughout my childhood my parents didn’t want me to stop and accept the world around me. They just didn’t know how they could help and thought conforming to norms was the best thing to do. They didn’t see their own incredible journey of migration as a huge step in paving a progressive cultural movement that would shape generations to come and therefore, didn’t think to share or celebrate it. Most crucially they lacked the access and knowledge of the people, systems and rituals around them that could have helped channel my demands for equality within a country they, themselves, were still learning to call home.

Whilst this is my story, I know I’m not alone. I want to pay it back, for me, my parents, my brothers, my children, my children’s children. And so, Cerestrial was born.

In today’s fast-paced, ever-evolving world, finding a career path that not only facilitates professional success but also personal fulfilment is a journey laden with challenges, triumphs, and lessons learned. Our recent conversation delved deeply into such a journey—an exploration of one individual’s career path that was anything but traditional.

Setting the Scene

The discussion began with a powerful context setter: careers aren’t linear, with a clear set of right or wrong answers waiting to guide us. Many find themselves navigating a myriad of diverse experiences, constantly adapting, and often discovering that the paths less traveled offer the richest insights. David, an exceptional leader from the public sector, shed light on his path from childhood passions to his current professional landscape.

From Computer Games to Public Sector Innovation

As a child, David excelled academically with a keen interest in computer games. This passion led him to a ground-breaking university program in computer gaming—a direct but ultimately misaligned choice. Discovering the difference between school and university environments, David shared candid insights into the struggles of adapting to an education system that demands self-driven learning, instead of the more guided approach of earlier schooling. Despite these challenges, he completed his degree and pivoted towards entrepreneurship, driven by a deeper desire for creative and financial independence. From selling self-created CD-ROMs about car building to embarking on various entrepreneurial ventures, David learned valuable lessons in adaptability and resilience.

Embracing Change and Learning from Experience

David candidly shared his journey through different sectors and roles, including a sudden immersion in public sector finance—an arena characterised by risk-aversion. This environment, he found, highlighted the his entrepreneurial drive and exceptional ability to connect dots across corporate, public, and political realms. He emphasized the importance of learning from peers and mentors, illustrating how observing and engaging with a diverse array of colleagues can expand one’s understanding and capabilities.

The Role of Networks and Unplanned Paths

One of the most profound takeaways for David has been the value of networking and the hidden opportunities it can unlock. Reflecting on the advantages of knowing and leveraging connections, our interviewee expressed a wistful acknowledgment of missed opportunities and unmaintained relationships, offering a reflective lens on the power of building a supportive professional network.

Emphasizing the evolving nature of leadership, David has embraced the necessity of learning from colleagues with diverse backgrounds and experiences. He candidly discussed recruitment strategies focused on inclusive language and hiring practices that value potential over traditional fit. This approach has enriched his organizational culture, introducing fresh perspectives that challenge entrenched norms and encourage innovation.

Conclusion: Lessons in Retrospect

This engaging conversation left a resonant impression: success comes in myriad forms, often shaped by unexpected paths and fuelled by the courage to embrace both change and difference. David’s reflections offer invaluable perspectives for anyone navigating the complexities of professional and personal growth. Such stories remind us that while luck and happenstance play their roles, intentional choices and open-minded engagement with the world around us can lead to a deeply fulfilling career.

In the often high-pressure world of leadership and professional environments, many individuals navigate the complexities of masking their true identities. Dan, a military veteran and professional leader, offers an inside look into the personal stresses of masking neurodivergent traits, and the journey towards authenticity and acceptance.

The Pressure to Conform

For much of his life, Dan felt compelled to blend into his environments. This need to conform began in his early years and was reinforced in the structured confines of military life. Dan describes a past where he mirrored and masked his true self—clean-shaven, uniformed, his appearance as indistinct as every other engineer around him. This was a survival mechanism in environments that valued uniformity over individuality. While this approach helped him integrate into various roles, it also led to a prolonged period of feeling isolated and disconnected from his true identity. The military provided a structured backdrop, simplifying the pressures of self-definition. Yet, it was only after leaving the service that Dan began to question and embrace his unique self, peeling back the layers of imposed conformity.

The Burden of Masking

Masking neurodivergent traits, such as those associated with ADHD, brought significant stress into Dan’s personal and professional life. The constant effort to meet the stereotypical expectations of normalcy became mentally exhausting. This societal pressure often left him feeling as though he was playing a part rather than truly engaging with his authentic self. Dan’s story sheds light on the finer details of how masking impacted his well-being. From managing his ADHD-related memory issues to the anxiety that comes with social interactions, the cost of hiding his neurodivergent nature was a heavy emotional burden.

The Path to Unmasking

The turning point for Dan was his ADHD diagnosis, which opened the door to understanding his experiences in a new light. It allowed him to step back and recognize the importance of authenticity and the weight of masking—which had often been misinterpreted as mere personality quirkiness—thus leading him to embrace a genuine self-expression. Dan’s journey has been one of gradually shedding the façade and learning to champion who he truly is. This reality is reflected in physical manifestations—like his choice to grow out his hair, adorn tattoos, and express himself freely in his attire, showcasing a personal reclamation of identity.

Leadership and Authenticity

In embracing this path, Dan has redefined what leadership means to him. By fostering a working environment that values individuality and diversity, he seeks to shield others from the same pressures of masking. His leadership style, grounded in emotional intelligence and a focus on team inclusivity, underscores the importance of authentic expression without fear of judgment or repercussion. Dan advocates for environments where people feel safe revealing their true selves, emphasizing that true innovation and progress stem from the power of diverse experiences and perspectives. His mission is clear: to break down barriers and encourage open dialogue about neurodiversity.

Moving Forward

Dan’s experience serves as an inspiring call to action for both individuals and organizations. It highlights the critical need to create spaces where people can show up as their authentic selves, free from the burdens of masking. By fostering understanding and acceptance, we can nurture environments that honour and celebrate the full spectrum of diversity. In conclusion, Dan’s story of unmasking is not just a personal journey—it is a beacon for change. It invites us to reconsider how acceptance and self-expression can transform personal and professional landscapes, ultimately leading to more innovative and inclusive communities. Let’s take his story as a catalyst for embracing authenticity and combating the silent burdens faced by countless others.

In a candid conversation, Gaëlle shares her journey of self-discovery and empowerment, highlighting the significance of authenticity and mentorship in the professional sphere. Her insights provide a powerful reminder that success is not merely about willpower, but about embracing who you truly are.

Challenging the Notion of Willpower

“It’s not about willpower. It’s about not giving up,” Gaëlle asserts, challenging the common belief that wanting something enough guarantees success. This conviction stems from her personal experience as an individual navigating complex societal and cultural dynamics. Gaëlle eloquently expresses the struggle of representing oneself authentically. “Can I represent myself and not every future different black person around? It’s not fair, but it is what it is.” Her words resonate deeply with those who find themselves in situations where they feel the pressure to symbolize a larger group.

The Journey of Staying True

Gaëlle’s determination to remain true to herself while pursuing her career is a testament to her resilience. “I will not stop. I will not try to shrink myself to please these people,” she declares. This unwavering commitment to authenticity inspires those grappling with similar challenges.

The Role of Mentorship

Recently, Gaëlle has taken on the role of a mentor within her company, particularly focusing on young women. She emphasizes, “It’s about having the codes sometimes that you don’t have if nobody told you; you would never know.” By imparting knowledge and experience, Gaëlle is breaking barriers and empowering the next generation to step confidently into their own identities.

Cultural Awareness and Career Growth

Drawing from her background, Gaëlle recognizes the value of cultural awareness in professional settings. “Leadership is more about supporting and progressing towards the right direction,” she explains. With her career initially rooted in the French-speaking world, Gaëlle brings a unique perspective that enhances her contributions to the broader team.

Concluding Reflections

In a world where overcoming adversity is often heralded, Claire’s story stands as an extraordinary lesson in resilience and self-awareness. Through a candid conversation, Claire offers a profoundly insightful narrative of her experiences growing up in an impoverished district and how those early life challenges sculpted the exceptional person she is today. This blog post explores key themes from Claire’s interview, emphasizing the power of self-awareness, the importance of role models, and the invaluable lessons learned from adversity.

A Childhood Without Comparisons

Growing up in dire poverty, Claire’s childhood memories paint a vivid picture of resilience in the face of scarcity. She recounts how, as a child, she lacked toys, often finding solace in her imagination. Despite the financial hardships—sleeping on a bare floor, lacking basic amenities, and having only one meal a day—Claire experienced a happy childhood. Her story underscores a vital truth: in the absence of a reference point, children like Claire view their circumstances as normal, unknowingly preserving their happiness through deeper, interpersonal relationships.

The Realization of Resilience

Claire shared her journey to understanding her resilience through both everyday life and extraordinary challenges. Her story of overcoming a severe accident at age 21, which resulted in temporary paralysis, is particularly compelling. During this life-altering event, Claire remained astonishingly calm, focusing on what she could control. This pivotal moment cemented her self-perception as resilient and highlighted her capacity to adapt and strategize through adversity.

Confronting and Embracing Differences

A significant portion of Claire’s narrative addresses the interactions and realizations that accompany being different, whether culturally, socially, or in the workplace. She recounts experiences of feeling excluded, due to her impoverished upbringing and diverse background, particularly in settings where others were oblivious to their privilege. Yet, Claire deftly redefines these interactions, often reframing narratives to ensure inclusivity and shared understanding.

Role Models and Aspirations

Role models play a significant role in Claire’s life. From her childhood dream of becoming an astronaut inspired by watching Carl Sagan, to her admiration for mountaineers, she illustrates how aspiration can be fuelled by visionary examples. Though she did not achieve all her childhood dreams, the influence of those role models enabled her to find fulfillment in supporting others’ adventurous pursuits.

Building Strong Relationships in the Workplace

Claire advocates for nurturing meaningful relationships within the workplace, regarding them as critical to personal and professional growth. She highlights the missed opportunities within corporate environments to celebrate cultural diversity and foster mutual understanding. Claire stresses the potential for workplaces to evolve into inclusive mini-societies that value personal connections over transactional interactions.

Lessons for the Future: Self-Awareness and Growth

Reflecting on her life, Claire emphasizes the importance of self-awareness in leadership and personal development. By sharing these insights, she offers valuable lessons for those navigating their paths—particularly young professionals from underprivileged backgrounds. Claire’s overarching message encourages embracing one’s unique journey while striving for advocacy and inclusivity in all aspects of life.

Conclusion: A Glass Half Full

Claire’s life philosophy embodies the principle of recognizing and utilizing what you have, rather than focusing on deficits. Her unique perspective, shaped by both challenges and successes, offers a testament to the power of resilience and the strength found in diversity. Claire’s story shows listeners the power of breaking free from socially imposed limitations and embracing every moment as an opportunity for growth and learning. In conclusion, Claire’s narrative is more than just an account of overcoming adversity; it’s a powerful reminder of the possibilities that arise when resilience meets self-awareness. Her story serves as an inspiring guide for anyone seeking to navigate through life’s challenges with grace and determination.
